A Witchy Family Portrait Session

Witchy New Orleans Family Portrait Photography

I’ve steered clear of using props in my work for the most part. Props can take things from cute to cheesy pretty quickly (and I also don’t specialize in young children or newborns where props come in super handy). However, I’m all about a witchy theme with stylized wardrobe!

Krystalynn was planning a visit to New Orleans with her family and wanted family portraits that had a witchy feel to them. It was their first family portrait session and the typical family portrait vibe wasn’t for them. When she found a website for a photographer proudly proclaiming her weirdness, she knew she’d found the right place.

We discussed working in a cemetery but with it being late July, the heat in those shadeless concrete cemeteries dressed in all black was a concern (cemeteries close long before dark, forcing visitors to wander around in peak-sunlight-hours). So I planned to take them into the trails in the back of city park for a deep-woods vibe. But it rained nearly every day through June and July and it poured the morning of their shoot. I got down there early to check the trails but it was insanely muddy. So we opted for the front of the park and I tried to use angles that kept most of the houses, cars, and other signs of life out of most of the photos (a few signs of life did slip into a couple shots). Since it had been raining so much and a lot of the park was flooded, I used the puddles to our advantage for some cool reflection shots.

The end result was a really unique take on a family-photo session that was anything but boring- exactly the type of experience I love bringing to clients!
