David and Natalie: New Orleans Surprise Proposal Photography

New Orleans Surprise Proposal Photography

David proposes to Natalie in front of St. Louis Cathedral

I love, love love when a surprise proposal times out perfectly with the setting sun. Sure, we plan it ahead of time so that the light should be just right. But if it ends up super overcast or rainy, we may not have the sun we were hoping for. But this proposal was one of the setting sun-drenched ones that felt super magical.

Jackson Square is the most requested location for Surprise Proposals in New Orleans. With St. Louis Cathedral as your backdrop, no one will have to guess where you proposed. It’s an iconic view and there’s no mistaking that it’s New Orleans. But if we don’t time it just right, the light may not be optimal. It could be sitting in just the wrong spot to wash out the background entirely. That’s why we plan beforehand!

I set the time with David for his proposal based on other proposals I had done nearby recently before his. July isn’t historically a busy month for me and I’ve been using all of my resources to adapt to how the sun moves in late summer (typically, I’m hiding inside from the sun this time of year!). I always pad the timeline a little bit just in case there’s a late (or early!) arrival. But in David’s case, he booked a carriage ride for right before so they showed up right on time. However, they walked up to the spot on the wrong side and I guess didn’t see me standing where we’d planned. I had cleared a space for them on the one side but there were people standing along the railing on the other side! It looked like David was stalling, waiting for those people to move instead of heading over to me. So I casually walked over to the other side without looking conspicuous. David moved him and Natalie into position in front of me and I was really happy I’d made the call to move!

David whipped out that teal Tiffany’s box and nailed the proposal- the sun hitting at just the right angle to bathe them in magical, golden light. To make it even more perfect-a group of women dressed in neon outfits had been watching from across the street and cheered when she said yes! I can plan as much as I want but sometimes the unplanned elements play out just right.

David had arranged for an engagement session following the proposal so we made our way through the quarter for a bit before I dropped them off where he’d made celebratory dinner reservations- and there was another surprise waiting for Natalie there!

David ordered a custom acrylic plaque from etsy that had the coordinates of the proposal, the date, and an inside joke between the two of them on it. He had it shipped to me and I delivered it to the restaurant before the proposal, asking if they could set it up on their table before they arrived. I love it when proposals have these lagniappe touches that make the whole thing feel more special.
