Cody and Jess’ Engagement Session in City Park
You might remember Cody and Jess from my previous post about their Surprise Proposal Photography in Jackson Square. Cody had chosen to add a quick engagement session after his proposal. But it ended up being crazy cold that day so we scheduled the engagement part of his proposal to a warmer day a few weeks later. The cool thing about doing that is that not only did they get photos in both the French Quarter and City Park, but Jess knew about the engagement session so she could accessorize and bring wardrobe changes. Plus it was a good 30 degrees warmer and made for a much more enjoyable portrait session!
We had a good time wandering around City Park for an hour. Cody and Jess are the kind of couple who never stop laughing (which you would know is my absolute favorite if you’ve been reading my blog!). Some couples are sweet and sentimental. And some couples know just how to get each other to laugh uncontrollably and I especially love photographing laughter! No…wait…. I love catching sweet moments. Can I love both? Ok. I love both. Anyway, I digress.
We caught that gorgeous golden hour at New Orleans City Park that lights up the moss. Many novice photographers use sunset light as the front light, bathing their subjects in a warm glow. However, I like to level up and use it as a backlight and balance with fill flash from the front. It makes for natural skin tones with beautifully lit details behind the subject- and perfect lens flare if I angle it just right. Basically, all the things people add in photoshop in post but done in camera! Sure, I’ll likely be blind soon from staring into the sun but I’ll chalk that up to an occupational hazard (and start looking for some cute tiny glasses for my tiny face).
