Tara and Melanie’s LGBTQ Elopement at the tree of life in audubon park

Melanie and Tara’s elopement on a sunny Spring morning under a 300 year old Oak. Affectionately called the Tree of Life, it’s a popular location for small weddings and elopements. Tucked away behind the giraffes in Audubon zoo, The Tree of Life is a gorgeous backdrop for a ceremony.

They had originally planned to get hitched on March 31st but the forecast was really sketchy. So we moved it to April 1st. Of course it ended up being beautiful and cloudy on the 31st and windy and sunny on the first! Talk about April fools! It didn’t matter, though. Melanie and Tara exchanged loving vows through tears and laughter, surrounded by their closest friends and family.

Two things about this elopement made it extra special. First, it was all women! Even the officiant and their dog (and obviously, me). I have photographed plenty of LGBTQ elopements and weddings before but never one that was entirely women. And second, it was the first wedding I have photographed where every single person present had been vaccinated against covid. It was truly wonderful to stand with all of those women that morning and feel only love- not any of the worry that has hung over our heads the last year. It was a beautiful ceremony and even though I had never met any of these women before, I was definitely tearing up right along with them.
