The Best Places to Propose in New Orleans in 2025

If you are hoping to be one of the hundreds of couples that gets engaged in New Orleans this year then this post is for you! After being a part of more than 200 Surprise Proposal experiences in the Big Easy, I have the inside scoop on the best proposal locations in New Orleans. This is my third edition of this list and while some spots are holding strong, others have been banished for all eternity. Keep reading to discover what (and why!) my picks are for the Best Places to Propose in New Orleans for 2025.

1. Pop the Question at Jackson Square

Alright, let's start with a classic! If you're dreaming of a proposal that screams "New Orleans," Jackson Square is your spot. With the iconic St. Louis Cathedral as your backdrop and the sounds of street musicians filling the air, it's pure magic. Just picture this: you, your sweetheart, and a moment that's straight out of a movie. Include a champagne toast after to dial up the romance and show you put some extra thought into it. Keep in mind that this is a popular tourist spot, so it's perfect for couples who love the energy and excitement of the French Quarter (and don’t mind a small audience cheering after you get the “yes!”) But if you're looking for something more intimate, no worries! I’m just getting started.

2. Propose In an Historic New Orleans Church

Want a proposal that's both romantic and awe-inspiring? Then let's talk about historic New Orleans churches. These architectural gems are simply breathtaking, with soaring ceilings, stained glass windows, and a variety of aesthetics from light and airy to dark and moody. Some churches, like Hotel Peter and Paul, Marigny Opera House, and Felicity, have been beautifully restored (and deconsecrated) and are now used as event venues. While their interiors are already breathtaking on their own, they are also canvases that lend themselves wonderfully to proposal decor. And if you weren’t already sold, an air-conditioned church is a solid choice in the summer months when it is just too hot and humid to propose outside in New Orleans.

3. Get Engaged In a Stunning New Orleans Mansion

If you're envisioning a proposal that's grand, romantic, and has that classic New Orleans architecture, a New Orleans mansion is the way to go. These historic, Victorian era homes offer a glimpse into the city's storied past, with ornate details, lush gardens, and an undeniable sense of Southern charm. Many mansions, like the Solari and Derbes Mansion, are available for private events, allowing you to create a truly intimate proposal experience. Including musicians, your partner’s favorite flowers, or even a romantic dinner for two can take a thoughtful proposal at a stately mansion and push it over the top.

4. Pop The Question In a Bookstore or Library

To all you book nerds, this one’s for you! If you and/or your sweetheart share a love for all things literary, a proposal in a bookstore or library might be the perfect fit. Imagine the hushed atmosphere, the scent of old books, and splashes of colorful book bindings creating a unique backdrop for your proposal. New Orleans has some truly charming bookstores and libraries, each with its own unique character. To make it even more special, consider having a custom book made with a message inside that you and your partner to “find” while perusing the stacks. This makes for a surprise proposal reveal straight out of a storybook!

5. Propose In a Secret Bywater Courtyard

Just a stone’s throw from the French Quarter, the Bywater neighborhood, is filled with secret courtyards that offer a secluded and romantic escape. These hidden gems are like something out of a dream, with lush greenery, antique fountains, and classic New Orleans architectural details creating a private and enchanting atmosphere. With the help of a local guide (that's me!), you can discover these secret spots and create a truly special moment that your partner won’t soon forget.

6. Get Engaged On Bourbon Street

Now, before you say "no way," hear me out! I'm not talking about the rowdy, booze-drenched part of Bourbon Street that everyone has heard about. There's a quieter, more residential area with beautiful balconies, gas lamps, and iconic New Orleans shotgun houses. Imagine strolling through the French Quarter hand-in-hand with your love and then happening upon a street musician playing your song in front of a beautiful historic home. And just like something out of a movie, you stop and pop the question! You can even arrange to have rose petals rain down from a balcony to really ramp up the romance. This area is perfect for when you want the French Quarter vibe without all of the French Quarter noise.

7. Pop the Question at the Peristyle in New Orleans City Park

Nestled in the heart of City Park, the Peristyle is an architectural gem that's just begging to be the backdrop for your proposal. This neoclassical structure, with its graceful columns and arches, creates a sense of grandeur and romance that's simply unmatched anywhere else in New Orleans. Plus, it's conveniently located near Ralph’s on the Park where you can have a celebratory engagement dinner after you get the “yes!”. One of the best parts of The Peristyle is that it is an actual venue that can be rented and reserved just for your proposal giving you access to the Oak backdrops of City Park but with a bit more privacy and the assurance no randos will walk into the middle of your proposal! And if you time it just right, you can get some stunning light from the setting sun.

8. Propose in New Orleans Botanical Gardens in City Park

For all you nature lovers out there, the New Orleans Botanical Gardens is a dream come true. With its diverse collection of plants, flowers, and sculptures, there are many options for a romantic proposal. You can choose from various themed gardens, like the Japanese Garden or the Rose Garden, to create a personalized and unforgettable experience. And if you propose in the right time of Spring, you can catch the stunning bloom of the Peggy Martin rose, a pink rose that survived for two weeks under the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina. It’s a backdrop that symbolizes a relationship that can weather anything life sends its way.

9. Get Engaged In the Oak Grove of City Park

If you're looking for a proposal spot that's both peaceful and stunning, the Oak Grove in City Park is calling your name. Imagine walking under a solid canopy of ancient oak trees draped in Spanish moss, their branches stretching all the way down to the ground. These trees are truly awe-inspiring and lend themselves well to proposals with a magical or enchated vibe. Unlike the touristy Tree of Life (which appeared on my previous lists!), there are numerous Oaks in City Park that are a bit more off the beaten path. City Park is also much closer to other attractions and restaurants to use as a backstory to get your partner there. Add some romantic decor, a musician, or a surprise sprinkling of rose petals to take the experience from simple to extraordinary.

10. Propose in a New Orleans Cemetery

Okay, hear me out on this one! For all my spooky couples and goth bb’s out there you simply MUST consider proposing in a New Orleans cemetery. I know it sounds a little bizarre, but trust me, these "Cities of the Dead" are hauntingly beautiful. You'll be surrounded by ornate stone tombs, Live Oak trees, and the distinct feeling that you are a part of something much deeper than one can experience in a single lifetime. It's the perfect spot for couples who enjoy their romance with a touch of the macabre. You can include decor or musicians here, too! Just always ask permission of the eternal residents, first, and be sure to pay your respects before you go (it is customary to leave a coin at the gate on your way out!)
