New Orleans Surprise Proposal Photography
John pops the question at Jackson Square in New Orleans
Surprise Proposals often come with more surprises than just a ring. A number of proposers have also wanted to surprise their love with family and friends to help them celebrate their engagement! This can be a little bit tricky-everybody has to be on board to keep the secret! They also have to all make sure to be at the right place at the right time- that’s where I come in.
John planned his proposal for the day after Christmas at Jackson Square. I knew it was going to be super busy down there which would actually make hiding family even easier. But we weren’t talking just a couple of parents- this was almost their entire extended family! John and Alexis are from Mississippi and Alexis takes a yearly trip to New Orleans with her family. So it seemed a perfect time to sneak his family there as well. I had John put me in touch with his mom so I could safely stow them away before the big moment. One of his aunts didn’t make it on time but otherwise, there was quite a crew hiding waiting to surprise Alexis!
I made eye contact with John as he approached the spot. I turned around to make sure I had a clean shot and I saw a group of six young women being hustled by a local. There are always locals hustling folks over there. They’re used to seeing me and they always know the situation when I show up. I try to stay out of the way of their hustle and they stay out of the way of proposals. But this group was RIGHT in the way. So I hurried over and said “hey you ladies want to watch a proposal happen?” Of course they did! So I said “okay then I need y’all to move about five feet that way!” and hurried them out of the way. The spot was cleared just in time for John and Alexis to walk up.
With some proposals, I have to ask “so, were you surprised?” But not this time! The look on Alexis’ face said it all. She was totally caught off guard. John was beaming when his family popped out of hiding clapping and cheering! All of the tourists and hustlers up there erupted in cheers too (with the group of young women possibly being the loudest). It was a really joyful moment and I was so stoked for John and Alexis!
