Luke Proposes to Savanna in New Orleans City Park
Luke’s surprise proposal marked the second time a parent has hired me to help their kid propose- except this was the first time the mother of the bride-to-be hired me! She was so excited about the prospect of her daughter marrying Luke that she wanted to help make the moment great- and get spectacular images to boot.
It can be a little weird when my client is technically a different person than the one I’m working with. Sometimes it results in a “too many chefs” situation. But not this time. Savanna’s mom, Jessica, was happy to set Luke up for whatever proposal his heart desired. She and Luke had originally envisioned a French Quarter backdrop. But after talking to Luke about all the proposal location options in New Orleans, he went with City Park. Considering how busy the French Quarter has been lately (and the return of street performing around Jackson Square) I was pretty stoked he went with the park.
Most people who hire me to photograph their Surprise Proposal want an intimate moment in a beautiful setting (some people want to go over the top and I’m here to make those happen, too!). Luke liked the idea of a quiet walk through the park ending in a proposal as the sun set behind them. And that’s exactly what he got.
I brought my best friend along to help out with portraits afterwards and pretended to photograph her when I saw Luke and Savanna approaching the fountain. That way I was in position but not facing the fountain so it didn’t look conspicuous. I kept them in my periphery until I saw Luke hitting a knee and I spun to fire away. Savanna was completely surprised (as evidenced by her Home Alone-esque reaction) and I had to give them a few minutes so she could let it sink in. She kept going from looking at the ring to throwing herself into Luke’s arms. I stayed back and took candid photos but I was close enough to hear Luke saying “I love you” over and over. Damnit, I’m tearing up thinking about it!
After a few minutes, we went for a walk in the park for some engagement photos. Jessica really wanted some New Orleans scenery so I dropped them in front of Cafe du Monde in city park. While it’s not the most well-known location, Cafe Du Monde is definitely one of the most iconic New Orleans destinations. We also jumped inside of Popp Bandstand, a location I haven’t used in a while! It’s always fun when I get to mix it up.
