Tessa and Scott: New Orleans Engagement Photography

This Texas couple visits New Orleans for an engagement session in City Park

There’s this unwritten rule of client management: everything can go swimmingly with many clients but there will be one where everything goes haywire. Tessa was that one special client who got to deal with my CRM system going bananas. It wasn’t that bad. But things like broken links in emails that normally work, a client portal repeatedly deactivating for no reason, and a contract deciding to up and expire just plagued our pre-shoot experience (If you’re reading this, Tessa, thank you again for your patience!!). Whenever things like that happen, I work quickly to get them fixed and hope the client doesn’t think I’m a total hack. Using a CRM was one of the smartest business decisions I’ve ever made. As busy season has exploded, there’s no way I could keep everything straight without the help of a system. However, technology is just as flawed as humans and sometimes things are just a wee bit busted. Anyway, Tessa was an absolute angel while I kept having to fix things. She was also flexible with her date as I was already booked on the original day she wanted. When I say busy season has exploded, I mean it has EXPLODED. I’m super grateful for all of the work and also really happy I use a CRM to stay organized- even if it gets wonky sometimes.

The weekend of Tessa and Scott’s engagement session, City Park was a madhouse. I had 3 sessions there that weekend and I was certainly not the only photographer at work. On their session date, I saw two weddings, 3 engagement shoots, and 2 birthday parties all happening simultaneously. Navigating around the other photographers was tricky. But it meant I had to use some locations I don’t normally use and I was SO happy with the results. That rose-lined bridge is 100% getting added into my portrait session rotation. To be honest, I was ready to shake things up. It’s easy to get into the habit of using the same locations on repeat. For one, they are tried and true. I know that they work. I know what the light does. I know how to make people look their best while using them. But also, when other clients see past photos at certain locations, they request them. So by the 30th engagement session of the year or whatever, I’ve used the same location as many times. So I was actually pretty happy that we had to try some new stuff.

Tessa and Scott were so incredibly easy to work with. Some couples take a bit of warming up but not these two. We dove in and they started nailing poses right of the bat. I was really glad they’d gone for an hour-long session with an outfit change rather than a shorter one. I was enjoying working with them so much and I’m happy we got to take our time a little bit. I really like how the second outfit diversified this image set as well- transitioning from swampy backdrops to big, beautiful oak trees. I always encourage couples to bring accessories to mix it up if there isn’t time for a full change. But booking a session with time for an outfit change is a really good idea. And you’ll see why in the photos!
