Oscar and Eva: New Orleans Surprise Proposal Photography

Oscar proposes to Eva at the bridge in New Orleans City Park
I have complicated stories to tell about a lot of New Orleans Surprise Proposals. But some of them are simple, go according to plan, and result in a happy couple and beautiful images. Oscar and Eva’s surprise proposal was all of those things… save for an unplanned leap out of the bushes.
I don’t normally hide before a proposal. I need to occasionally if the plan calls for it. But most of the time I hide in plain sight because we are in public locations where photographers are commonplace. For the bridge, I do need to stand off of the path in the bushes a little bit. Not hiding but also not standing in a normal place. That’s where I was when I spotted Oscar and Eva headed my way. I took some photos of the absolutely brilliant sunset that was happening while they walked by me. When I looked to see what Oscar was up to, I noticed I wasn’t going to be able to see Eva’s face. So as soon as he hit his knee, I leapt out of the bushes and onto the sidewalk to modify my angle. This job definitely requires being quick on my feet (I’m reminded of the time the guy was nervous and got confused, rounded a corner, went to the entirely wrong spot and I had to sprint to catch the shot. Caught the shot, though!).
Eva was completely surprised and absolutely overjoyed. They had been together 14 years and Eva had been hinting she wanted to get married for a little while. In the eyes of the state of California, where they’re from, they’re pretty much already married. Might as well throw a party and make it official.
