On June 26th, 2015, joy erupted in New Orleans in a way I wish it had been able to many, many years before. The Supreme Court finally struck down the ban on same-sex marriage in the United States and the rainbow flags that had always lined the streets of New Orleans blew in the breeze just a little more proudly as so many people danced beneath them. As a New Orleans Wedding Photographer, the decision was one I’d been waiting for for ages; I never felt completely right photographing weddings when only certain people were allowed to be legally joined together. Now that Love has truly won and my feed is filled with beautiful images of unions between all different types of couples, I’ve been waiting for the day when I could tell the Love Story of an LGBTQPIA couple. To me, there’s an extra level of importance in their stories knowing that a year ago these couples didn’t have the same rights as heterosexual couples. Their stories deserve to be told as colorfully as any one else’s and I was delighted to make that happen for Justin and Nick.
The way Nick recounts the first time he met Justin sounded like a story straight out of a movie. It was Justin’s first night in town and as soon as Nick laid eyes on him, he knew that one day they would get married. Sure enough a year later, Justin took Nick back to the restaurant they went to on their first date and popped the question, planting a stunning engagement ring on Nick’s finger. I loved not only listening to Nick’s account of their Love Story (he’s definitely the storyteller of the couple) but also seeing the way Justin watched Nick as he told it- the look in Justin’s eye was definitely that of a smitten man. We got lost for hours talking wedding details and I’m pretty excited to see how everything plays out in the Fall. These two will have a wedding that is uniquely their own, forgoing tradition in all the right ways to make sure the day is the wedding they’d always dreamed of.
Their engagement session might be one of the most fun I’ve ever done. It was pretty hard for any of us to take ourselves too seriously. It didn’t hurt that my assistant, Chelsea, couldn’t stop cracking jokes… and we couldn’t stop laughing! I absolutely love the results.
Nick and Justin tie the knot November 4th, 2016.
