While his story is appearing third in the series, Dwayne Boudreaux, owner of Circle Food Store in the 7th Ward of New Orleans, was the first that I photographed for this project. Hurricane Katrina shuttered Circle Food for nearly a decade, creating a food desert for anyone in that community who was able to return. Dwayne made it his mission to reopen the store and better the neighborhood.
Working with Dwayne and helping to tell his story was particularly relevant to me. I only took one photo when I ventured into New Orleans about 15 days after the storm. And that one photo was of Circle Food and St. Bernard ave.
I remember getting out of the car under the overpass and feeling the ground crackle beneath my feet where standing water had turned the streets to segmented chunks of dried mud. The store loomed over the hushed street like a ghost shell, the water lines flanking its columns. The store would remain that way for years until Dwayne was finally able to open it again. His is a story of hard work, determination and perseverance. Hit play below to watch his video.
