I met Doc Lou in my first experience with “couch hosting” in 2011 via the hospitality exchange website Couchsurfing.org. Lou left an indelible impression on me with his bad french jokes and hilarious anecdotes. So when I visited Paris the following year, he held true to the “exchange” aspect of Couch Surfing and hosted me at his flat, showing me Paris the way a local enjoys it. My first night there, he took me to Le Plastique where I photographed him performing with The Doc Lou Trio.
This year, he returned to Louisiana on a mission to further his musical education and busk on the historic streets of New Orleans. Lou and I collaborated on images for his upcoming Blues album. He wanted them to reflect the connection he feels to Southern Louisiana so I took him to a place filled with the iconic scenery this part of the country is known for. Here are some of my favorites from our shoot at the Jean Lafitte Historic Park and Preserve.
